12/25/2023 0 Comments History of kansas city jazz orchestra![]() ![]() ![]() In 2022, Basse and the 21- piece City Light Jazz Orchestra highlighted the Sunflower Music Festival, and he has presented a history of Kansas City Jazz for Swing University - Jazz at Lincoln Center. Kansas City jazz was also defined by its use of riffing, in which different sections of a band would improvise. The city’s jazz musicians developed a unique style characterized by a relaxed, fluid sound, extended soloing, and heavy blues influence. This program, known as The Depth and Breadth of Jazz, is heard daily on the 8 stations of Kansas Public Radio, and is now aired by more than 50 affiliate stations across the country. Kansas City played a vital role in the development of jazz during the 1920s and 1930s. He then went on to create Jazz with David Basse, in early 2013. In 2009, he was a founding member of the cast of the nationally syndicated radio program 12th Street Jump. Basse has hosted The Jazz Scene on Kansas Public Radio since the turn of the century. ![]() Whatever listeners hear in Basse’s well-seasoned voice makes them respond enthusiastically. Traveling the world, singing the praises of his adopted hometown, Basse has been compared to many of the greats. Since 1982, David Basse has been at the forefront of the music scene in Kansas City, taking the torch from such legends as KC pioneers Charlie Parker, Count Basie, and Jay McShann. Kansas City has a long history of and reputation for jazz. The soloistic freedom of our arrangements showcases the charisma and excellence of our musicians. A partnership with the Kansas City Aviation Department provides a live Jazz Band. "Our joy in playing always reaches the hearts and legs of our audience. The October visit is part of a Sister City jazz exchange program between the cities of Hannover, Germany and Kansas City. Count Basie took over the organization in 1935. In 1925 he founded Walter Page and his Blue Devils, later joining Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra, which created the distinctive style of Kansas City jazz. Kansas City’s jazz scene will take on an international flair this fall when the Hannover Jazz Orchestra visits Kansas City for the first time. He also did graduate work in jazz history with the late Dick Wright. ![]()
